Customized Window Shades

By Lorri Mealey

For the sake of privacy, many people use roller shades as part of their existing window treatments. Vinyl roller shades are affordable, easy to install, and when not in use, they store easily out of the way. They don’t have any strings or cords, which pose safety hazards to babies and preschoolers. The big drawback to roller shades? They’re boring! There is no reason why the roller shades in your preschoolers bedroom can’t be as fun as the rest of the décor. Decorating stamps or stencils, and acrylic paint are all you need to add zest to once-boring roller shades.

What You Will Need
White Vinyl Roller Shade – Cut to fit your preschooler’s bedroom window.
Acrylic Paints – That match your preschooler’s existing bedroom décor.
Decorative Stencils or Stamps – That match your preschooler’s existing bedroom theme.

On a large table or the floor, unroll the shade to length of your window. Secure the bottom corners with a heavy object, such as a can of soup. Using either the stamps or stencils, add several designs that match your preschooler’s bedroom theme. Let the shade dry completely before hanging it up.

Below are some decorating ideas for dressing up roller shades that go along with bedrooms themes here at PreschoolRock.com.

Tree House Bedroom Theme – Decorate the roller shade with stamps shaped like different leaves and acorns.
Mermaid Bedroom Theme – Try using seashells and fish stamps or stencils, to add underwater whimsy to your roller shades.
Nature’s Garden Bedroom Theme – Use different floral stamps or stencils, mixed with small fern stamps to continue the garden theme of this bedroom.
Outer Space Bedroom Theme – Glow-in-the-dark-paint coupled with star and moon stamps transform a boring roller shade, making bedtime fun time.
Trains, Planes, and Automobiles Bedroom Theme – Use transportation themed stamps in a variety of bold colors to brighten up dull roller shades.

Create stripes by using blue painters tape. Simply tape off your design and paint away. Be careful when removing the tape from the edges of the roller shade, to prevent tearing. This is the same method used for creating a Simple Striped Wall Border.
