Step One: Paint the Walls
Mark the middle of each wall with a chalk line, or laser level. Paint the top half of three of the walls the light blue/turquoise, and paint the bottom half the dark blue. On the fourth wall, paint the top half light blue, and the bottom half a sandy beige color. This will be the “beach.” Pencil in gently rolling hills on the beige wall, filling them in with beige paint. Add waves to the other three walls, by filling in the wave stencil with the dark blue paint. To work faster, have two stencils ready, so you needn’t wait for the first one to dry before beginning the next wave.

Step Two: Select the Bedding
Because you are using blue as the background for this bedroom theme, the bedding should contain some blue to coordinate. However, it does not need to have a lot of blue in the pattern. Other colors that go well with this theme are tropical greens, tans, yellows and zesty orange. There are many beach and surf themed bedding available, in a variety or colors and patterns.

Step Three: Add Painted Details to the Walls
Using a large rub-on mural (which is essentially a giant paint-by-number picture) add towering palm trees with coconuts to the beige and blue wall. Using the acrylic paints, fill in the trees, adding highlights on the palm fronds and tree trunk. You could also add a treasure chest, using another rub on mural. Add sparkling plastic jewels to the treasure chest mural, with hot glue.

Step Four: Add the Window Treatments
Trim a grass skirt to eight inches in length and cut it to the width of your window. Next, hot glue the grass skirt to an inexpensive curtain rod, using a hot glue gun.

Step Five: Add More Details
For more details in the “ocean” add stamped fish and waving pieces of seaweed, painted in colors to match your preschooler’s bedding. Add a wave board or child-sized surfboard to the wall, to act as a decoration when not in use. From the ceiling, you could suspend a fishermen’s net, decorated with sea shells and coral. A beige sisal rug on the floor will look like a sandy beach. Swap out existing dresser knobs for ones with a surf or beach theme, and add a fun surfboard lamp for extra lighting.
